Aquaculture Training Courses
We offer several Aquaculture & Aquaponics Courses:
- 3-day Aquaculture System Management Course
- 9-day Practical Fish Farmer Course
- 2-day Commercial Aquaponics Course
We also run dedicated Courses for clients on specific topics, with or without SETA accreditation. For example, we have been approached to run a Water Quality Course with SETA accreditation. Let us know what your needs are and we will see how we can assist you.
Please note that all Courses are offered on condition that a minimum of 4 delegates must be secured, otherwise the Course may be postponed.
Aquaculture System Management
This 3-day Aquaculture Course aims to arm the delegate who intends entering the Aquaculture Industry with additional information, practical skills and the disciplines associated with managing a commercial fish farm. We cover largely the same theory addressed on the DVD Course, but in additional detail. Thereafter we conduct the practical exercises on our commercial fish farm to give delegates an opportunity to experience for themselves the practical components of aquaculture, including:
- Testing and understanding water quality variables and their interactions, as well as different methods of testing
- Breeding a range of fish species including egg layers, livebearers and mouth brooders
- Identifying fish parasites and pathogens, and deciding how best to treat them
- Feeding fish - how, where, when
- Infrastructure management for optimal production
- Stock management, including short cuts to save time, effort and stress on the fish
- Record keeping - what, how, where the store it and how to interpret the data
This Course is a MUST for anyone new to the industry and has been well attended, and much appreciated, by the delegates over the years. Delegates receive a comprehensive 167 page Aquaculture Course Manual which serves as a text reference in years to come, as well as the lecture handouts for each topic. The next Practical Aquaculture Course will be held:
29 to 31 March 2017, Pretoria.
Commercial Aquaponics Course
Aquaponics is growing rapidly as an interest and as a business venture in Southern Africa. This Course takes interested parties through the theory of aquaponics and the components, to the daily tasks associated with operating a commercial or hobbyist system, with the primary focus being understanding the Industry and commercial aspects.
The Course is generally run on our commercial aquaponics unit at the Aquaculture Academy in Grahamstown and the next Course will be held there 7 & 8 February 2017.
Practical Fish Farmer Course
The farming of fish has become a massive global industry producing in excess of 50 million tons of fish p.a. This 9-day Course takes the delegate through the daily routines associated with running of a commercial Fish Farm, focussing on Tilapia, Catfish and Trout, but refering to many other species as well. Fish farming theory is discussed in detail but the main focus is on the management systems and practical aspects of daily management. Although the focus is on Tilapia, fish farmers who produce other species will also benefit from the principles taught on this Course. The Course is run on the Aquaculture Academy in Grahamstown, South Africa and delegate numbers are limited to around 10 per Course to ensure personal attention.
The next Practical Fish Farmer Course will be run 11 to 19 February 2017.
SETA accredited Aquaculture Courses
The SETA accredited Training for either catfish or tilapia is done by arrangement with clients who have staff that require training. A group of 6 trainees is required as a minimum and this Course is 8 weeks long. Contact us to discuss your Aquaculture Training needs and how we can best assist you.
